Red-tailed Hawk Story: 2016, Week 1

Week 1 of Big Red and Ezra incubating their 3 eggs went very smoothly. As Laura Culley said, “They’re just like an old married couple – oh yeah, they ARE an old married couple!” We have become re-acquainted with familiar behaviors: incubation shifts, BRs continued bark “obsession”, Ez’s prey deliveries to BR, Ez’s affinity for nest time, BR’s physically “encouraging” Ez to vacate the nest when she is ready to resume incubation, and starling shenanigans. We laugh as we surmise that some of Ez’s gifts of prey or greenery are to bribe BR for more nest time. Whether or not this is true, Ez certainly does seem to love incubating and is often very reluctant to depart. Chat – greatly anticipated by many viewers – opened on Monday, 3/21.

A note has been added to this chart: “We can identify with certainty when each egg is laid but not the definite order of hatching. Therefore, the individual designations, such as “G1, G2, G3″ [on the chart] should be taken as reasonable estimates only.”
