Red-tailed Hawk Story: Growing and Beautiful

The adorable Gs are presenting us every day with new developments in mobility, awareness, feathers, feet, tails – everything! And how much do these nestlings EAT?! A starling that lasted a whole day when they were first hatched lasts a few minutes now.

Ezra has not spent much time at the nest as BR prefers he be out hunting. She vocalizes constantly when he arrives in case he needs reminders. And as we know, Ezra is a prolific hunter! At one point there were at least four squirrels, a chipmunk, and a starling on the nest.

We saw a G hork (gulp down large piece of) squirrel tail for the first time on 5/9.

On 5/14, BR brought the Gs their first snake (see video by dennisehelaine here). There were other snakes brought to the nest earlier this season but that was during incubation.

Ez has sneaked in some nest time and occasionally even some snacking. Snacking comes with the risk of being caught by BR and Ez didn’t QUITE get away with it on Saturday night!

Getting back to the G’s growth, G1 especially is exhibiting some pretty huge feet. Most viewers are surmising at this point that G1 and G2 are probably females and that G3 (with the smaller feet) is probably male. Of course, we don’t have DNA tests!

BR’s efforts to at least have an appearance of brooding continue to be sweet and comical. She is such a wonderful mother!

It is also quite humorous to observe BR’s ongoing dedication to housekeeping. It doesn’t matter to her if there is a kid in the way when she wants to work on the nest.

dennisehelaine caught this adorable video of a G who seemed to be trying to do a little nest building on his or her own.

On 5/12, it appeared that BR might have left the Gs on their own for the night (although we know that they wouldn’t really alone as she and Ez would be nearby). She remained off the nest even after it grew dark and the IR cam switched on. However, a few hours later she dropped down from above. She keeps us guessing!

Thanks, Ellie. WOW!! I watched Bogette’s video and knew what was going to happen but still my heart was pounding as I watched it. What a great video!! Sorry for the squirrel but marveled at EZ and his hunting prowess. We knew he was a good hunter but this is the first I’ve seen him in true action. One of those situations of being in the right place at the right time for sure.

I’m saving all of your journals to watch over and over.

You certainly outdid yourself in the humor department this week, as did the viewers. Too funny! Of course, we have a superb subject matter. And is it just me or does Ghent have a different camera view than the rest of us? Shots are too good!

Oh my, I think that next week in the slideshow I need to make it clearer that the captions are written by the person who did the scap! I didn’t suddenly get very funny! LOL. And, yes, good point about Ghent…hmmmm…… 🙂

Toni and Elly … strange, I was thinking the same thing about Elly’s screen caps which seem so clear. 🙂 I go to full screen—and I have a 30-inch monitor— and try to get the feed into HD (which has been a problem this year—so frustrating!); and then I reduce the size and increase the resolution a bit. At any rate, thanks for the compliments!

  5. Ezra & Big Red never cease to amaze us, the former for his hunting prowess and ability to provide ample bounty for his family, the latter for her sheer magnificence as a mom. Thanks Elly for a recap that is at once, entertaining, informative and humorous.

Thanks, Elly. I don’t always have time to follow the cam & tweets in detail every day, so I really appreciate your wonderful weekly summaries.
